Caffeine High: Matcha vs Coffee | PANATEA Blog

Most of us rely on tea or coffee to stay on top of our game throughout the day, but the way those drinks release caffeine varies significantly. So how does your body absorb matcha’s caffeine differently than coffee?

Let’s talk about what happens when you down a venti iced coffee. Within 10 minutes, coffee can impact alertness but then comes the crash and jitters. Coffee affects neurotransmitters in a way that causes your arteries to open wider, allowing more blood to flow through them. This increased blood flow brings more oxygen to your brain and tissues, making you feel more awake. However, because your body systems are moving quicker than usual, you feel the jitters. Caffeine also can stimulate hormones, such as fat-producing cortisol or adrenaline. These make your heart beat faster and cause the same physical symptoms as anxiety.

Unlike coffee, matcha doesn’t have enough caffeine to stimulate fat-producing cortisol production, but still enough to make you alert. One amino acid in particular, called L-Theanine, is known to reduce anxiety and enhance mood, while promoting alertness.
